When pilot, engineer and microelectronics specialist Ernst Schneider purchased Breitling in 1979, he recognized that the nearly 100-year-old brand needed to embrace new technology while respecting its heritage.
In 1979 Breitling is in deep financial trouble, the turbulent 70's had been tough on Breitling and the company was reduced to selling parts to other brands. In April 1979 Willy Breitling decided to pull up stumps and sold the company to Ernest Schneider the proprietor of the Sicura watch company.
In April 1979, the two men signed an agreement that allowed Schneider to take over the well-known names “Breitling” and “Navitimer.” Willy Breitling died just one month later, ending one era of Breitling watches and beginning another. When Breitling liquidated at the end of the 1970’s (78/79), all machinery was sold, inventory was sold and the trademarks and brand name were eventually sold as well after Willy Breitling died.
