The Maxi III Dial is a favorite among many 5513 collectors because its large tritium hour plots appear to touch the five minute hash marks underneath, giving it the nickname “lollipop”.The 5513 with its matte dial was produced from 1966 to around 1984, and it’s hard to imagine anyone who has a passion for vintage Rolex not to put one on their wrist at sometime.
A question comes to mind, “How can you tell the difference between a Serif Dial with tritium covering the serif of the hour markers versus a Non Serif Dial?” The answer to this question lies in the print of the “E” in “ROLEX” under the coronet.The top of the letter “L” in “ROLEX” has a tremendous amount of serif and sits to the left of center under the coronet. This dial features an “=” sign in the depth rating that is above and to the left .While some dial manufacturers might paint the text on the colored surface of the dial, those making the dials for the Rolex Submariner and the GMT did so in a way that the gold colored text and features are in relief or below the surface instead of on top.The reference 5512 was the first Rolex Submariner to be produced with crown guards. These protective features of the watch case are placed above and below the winding crown. The earliest models produced in 1959 had what have been called square crown guards.

The original Explorer of circa-1953 (even that isn’t carved in rock, as prototypes from 1952 have been noted) owes its name to the 1953 Everest expedition, the first prototype based on the Ref. 6098 Oyster Perpetual issued for that venture.
