Does anyone have any gripe with the Yacht Master, or is it just not as popular as the classics? Personally I find the YM 1 to be the least attractive of all the Rolex sport models. The bezel is absolutely HIDEOUS imo. It is not that the Yachtmaster isn't popular. It's just that the Submariner is super duper popular and in very high demand. The Submariner is the quintessential dive watch, the dive watch where all other dive watches are compared to. On the other hand, no company makes a sailing or yachting watch. If you’ve been around Rolex circles for any serious amount of time, you’ll likely have heard that the Yacht-Master II is simply too large of a watch for Rolex to have made - And to be fair, it’s verybig by Rolex standards. Lack of history, monochromatic look, perceived as not as durable as other Rolex tool watches, and the fact that true yachtsmen don't wear them for the most part are all strikes against it in manys eyes.
It truly baffles me why the current yacht master is not as popular some other models in the Rolex range. I personally think it’s a beautiful watch, specifically the version with the slate grey dial. Diminished capability. The Yacht-Master has only 100m of water resistance (down from the Sub's 300m) and a bi-directional bezel (potentially dangerous in a dive, since the bezel could rotate in a direction that suggests the diver has more oxygen left/more time remaining).
