The story of the Explorer began with two earlier bubblebacks, the references 6098 and 6150 (housing the calibre A296), which were utilized by adventurers and mountaineers at the beginning of the 1950’s.
As the 1016s were discontinued different service dials were made because, presumably, the original dial variations were not longer available. There appear to be three “standard” dials that were also used as service dials and one “service only” dial variant.Matte Dials. While there has never been an official statement of why Rolex moved from gilt to matte dials in the latter half of the 1960’s, the latter seems to exude the ‘tool watch’ vibe that Rolex aspired to inspire — while (likely) keeping production costs low. These dials have a pebbled black background printed on a copper plate.Mark 5. Serial Range: 66xxxxx-9xxxxxx + early R Serial. The final dial iteration is, ironically, not the last dial used in the 1016 line. As described previously, Mark 3’s are seen both before and after the Mark 4 and 5 dials for reasons that will only be known to those at Rolex Geneva.
The 1016 handsets come in two distinct types – flat and curved. This refers to the fact that on early 1016’s, meaning the gilt dials and Mark 1 matte dials until the ~1.7-1.8m range, the hour and minute hands are flat. After this, both hands become slightly convex for the rest of the model line.

Serial Range: 15xxxxx-35xxxxx (possibly also 44xxxxx, 51xxxxxx) Known colloquially as the frog foot because of the splayed points of the coronet, the Mark 1 dial marks Rolex’s move away from gilt dials toward the more utilitarian matte dial.Mark 5.
